Matt LaFleur hopeful Packers re-sign Davante Adams before free agency

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is optimistic on his team being able to re-sign Davante Adams in free agency.

Matt LaFleur hopes the Green Bay Packers will be able to retain Davante Adams in a new deal.

While the Packers have been an incredible regular-season team under LaFleur, they have failed to reach the Super Bowl on all three occasions he has served as their head coach. Though most of the NFL world is infatuated on what presumptive league MVP Aaron Rodgers will do next, LaFleur seems to like his team’s chances to keep the best wide receiver in football playing in Green Bay.

Here is what LaFleur said to the media on Monday after Saturday night’s heartbreaking home loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Divisional Round to end their once-promising season.

“Yeah, I sat down with ‘Tae for a while today, as well,” said LaFleur. “We kind of talked everything through and, again, another guy that we’re hopeful that we can come to an agreement with and, obviously, he’s done so much on the field, but I think it’s still the stuff that you all don’t get to see within the meeting room, with how he talks to his teammates, with how he sets a standard for everybody, there’s a reason he was voted a captain, rightfully so. He earned that.”

Adams has spent his entire professional career in Green Bay since being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Fresno State.

For Green Bay to have its best shot of retaining Adams, Rodgers probably needs to return as well. His backup Jordan Love may have offered some promise coming out of Utah State, but he is about to enter year three in the league and is still more of a project than a prospect. Of course, the Packers need to be aware that Adams could look to play with his college teammate, Derek Carr.

Yes, the Las Vegas Raiders would be a team Adams could potentially sign with. He and Carr balled out at Fresno State. Plus, the Silver and Black are in dire need of a No. 1 wide receiver. With a new general manager and potentially a new head coach, the Raiders are the likeliest team to sign Adams if he does not re-up with the Packers. Again, it all comes down to what Rodgers wants.

LaFleur has every reason to express confidence in the Packers’ ability to retain Adams, as it would be alarming if he seemed to be pessimistic about Green Bay’s chances.
