5 trades to help the Boston Celtics fix what’s broken
3. Celtics trade for Derrick White
Celtics get: Derrick White
Spurs get: Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, future first-round pick
With the emergence of Dejounte Murray, Derrick White has quietly taken a backseat. This season, White’s usage rating, 3-point percentage, and points per game average have all regressed from last year. In Boston, White would have more opportunities to operate as the lead guard in an offense, and also thrive off the ball when Marcus Smart or Payton Pritchard are running the show.
Due to his size, (6-foot-4) and feel for the game, White is more than capable of doing both, but could have untapped potential as a point guard. In addition, White could very possibly see an increase in open looks, with defenses overplaying on Brown or Tatum on a nightly basis. Most importantly, however, Boston would get a definitive shot-creator outside of Tatum and Brown within their lineup, who can play both guard positions, and score in bunches without disrupting the flow of an offense.
In return, the San Antonio Spurs would get two wing players with the ability to contribute immediately, and in the future. Josh Richardson would seamlessly fit into the Spurs’ backcourt, or even as a rotational piece, giving Murray another shooter, along with solid defense and the ability to put up points in stretches. Romeo Langford would give the Spurs another potential-filled young wing and could fit alongside Murray in the backcourt as well, with an evolving offensive skill set, size, and hard-nosed defense that would terrorize opposing backcourts.
