The Cincinnati Bengals are looking to get past the Kansas City Chiefs to reach the Super Bowl. But how many times have they made it to the big game?

The Cincinnati Bengals are in the AFC Championship Game for the first time since 1988. They held off the Las Vegas Raiders 26-19 in the Wild Card Round before defeating the top-seeded Tennessee Titans 19-16 in the Divisional Round. Now, they are looking to win their third AFC title at the expense of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The franchise that could not buy a playoff win for 31 years are now a win away from reaching Super Bowl 56 in Los Angeles, Cali. But how many times has Cincinnati reached the big game?

Cincinnati Bengals Super Bowl appearances

The Bengals have only reached the Super Bowl two times in their franchise’s history and have failed to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Below are the results of both appearances:

  • Super Bowl 16: San Francisco 49ers defeat Cincinnati 26-21
  • Super Bowl 23: San Francisco 49ers defeat Cincinnati 20-16

Cincinnati matched up against the Joe Montana-Bill Walsh San Francisco 49ers on both occasions, and could not get the W. The Bengals actually had a win in Super Bowl 23 in their grasps, but a touchdown pass from Montana to John Taylor gave the 49ers the lead with just 34-seconds remaining.

If the Bengals are to defeat the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game like they did back in Week 17, they can clinch their third Super Bowl berth. From there, they would face either the Los Angeles Rams or…the 49ers! You know it would be just fitting if Cincinnati faced off against San Francisco in the Super Bowl yet again.
