USMNT fans want Gregg Berhalter out after ugly World Cup qualifying loss to Canada
By Mark Powell
The United States men’s national team fell on its face Sunday afternoon, falling to Canada in World Cup qualifying.
The lackluster effort by USMNT — just another in a long line of many since Berhalter took over — is unfortunately the norm for a team that somehow still finds itself in the top-4 of the CONCACAF standings. As things stand right now, the United States would qualify for the World Cup, but it’s far from comfortable.
A win over Canada would’ve all but cemented the U.S. as the best team in their region. Instead, losing 2-0 in Hamilton put the United States squarely behind the likes of their neighbors to the North, and of course Mexico, in terms of World Cup qualifying. Suddenly, a looming matchup with Honduras is quite large.
USMNT: Gregg Berhalter angers fans with stubborn behavior
Berhalter’s insistence to keep youngster Ricardo Pepi out of the starting lineup in both the United States’ narrow win over El Salvador, and now a loss to Canada, looks sketchy to say the least given his impact as striker. Pepi did make a late appearance against Canada, but it was all for not.
USMNT fans have seen enough.
The USSF is at risk of alienating the fanbase if they keep Berhalter in charge much longer.
Sure, firing him after losing to Canada might be a bit of a stretch, but the clock is ticking after the last two lackluster results. A resounding win against Honduras shouldn’t just be expected — it should be necessary for Berhalter to keep his job moving forward.
