Indianapolis Colts: Does Aaron Rodgers make sense?

This is when the potential landing spots become a lot more realistic. The Colts are another team that had their season end unexpectedly due to quarterback play. Indianapolis lost to the Jaguars in week 18 due to Carson Wentz struggling to move the ball on the lowly Jacksonville defense.

General manager Chris Ballard was non-committal when asked about next year’s roster.

“When we made the decision to make a move on Carson, at the time of the decision, we felt good about it,” Ballard said. “And I still don’t regret it…. I won’t make a comment on who’s going to be here and who’s not going to be here.”

Wentz has shown in recent years that he cannot be trusted to make the smart play. The Colts have a roster that can win right now, but if the quarterback play is subpar, this team will continue to fall short.

Rodgers would be an excellent and realistic option for the Colts next season. Currently, Indianapolis has about $41 million in cap space and can save an additional $13 million if they release Wentz prior to June 1.

Rodgers would have a top offensive line, arguably the best running back in the league in Jonathan Taylor, serviceable weapons with Michael Pittman Jr. and T.Y. Hilton, and a very formidable defense that can give Rodgers plenty of wiggle room in games.

The Colts do not have their first-round pick in 2022, but the organization is very well-run and has shown that it can select great players in the middle rounds of the draft. Taylor and Pittman Jr. were both second-round picks and have been great pieces for this offense. Look for the Colts to add another weapon in this year’s draft to compliment Pittman Jr. and eventually take over for Hilton as the WR2.
