Yankees rumors, Anthony Rizzo

1. Anthony Rizzo

The Yankees’ appreciation for Rizzo is more of an acquired taste than an obvious attraction. He does provide them a left-handed bat that helps balance the lineup, but it’s fair to point out that his offensive production is slipping at a concerning rate.

On the flip side, Rizzo can provide Boone with another patient hitter who can help wear out other team’s starters. A moderate uptick in his offensive performance with the bat in his hands isn’t out of the question.

Where Rizzo might give the Yankees the most value is with his glove. He’s one of the best fielding first baseman out there which is particularly important when playing next to Gleyber Torres. Runs saved isn’t the most popular statistic in the world, but it’s one where Rizzo really grades out well.

Rizzo is currently an unrestricted free agent but he’s not going to cost anywhere near what Freeman will command on the open market. A modest, one or two-year deal could allow the Yankees to preserve payroll flexibility moving forward. A platoon between Rizzo and Voit could even emerge as the best option for the Yankees next season. No matter what, expect Rizzo to return and figure into the equation.
