Eric Bienemy to interview with Saints for overdue head coaching job
The Saints know replacing Sean Payton is a difficult task, but New Orleans believes Eric Bieniemy might have what it takes to fill Payton’s shoes.
Eric Bieniemy has played a key role in building the Chiefs’ dynamic offense with Patrick Mahomes at the helm but that work hasn’t helped him land a head coaching job. That could change if Bieniemy’s interview with the New Orleans Saints goes well this weekend.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the current Chiefs offensive coordinator is set to meet with Saints officials on Sunday to discuss the possibility of replacing Sean Payton.
Saints interviewing Eric Bieniemy for head coaching job
Bieniemy will join the likes of Byron Leftwich and Brian Flores as high-profile candidates to be linked with the opening in New Orleans.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has publicly lamented Bieniemy’s lack of opportunity to land a head coaching gig in years past. He would hate to lose his talented play-caller but Reid understands the benefit of helping his staff members reach their goals even if it means leaving his employment.
The Saints seem focused on hiring a candidate who can help retool the team’s offense in the wake of Payton’s departure.
Identifying a new franchise quarterback will be a big challenge for the team’s head coach. Bieniemy’s role in helping Patrick Mahomes become arguably the top quarterback in football makes him an attractive potential option for the higher-ups in New Orleans.
Now that Bieniemy is on the goal line of securing his dream of being an NFL head coach it’s up to him to push himself into the end zone. He’s helped the Chiefs offense do that numerous times but time will tell if he can help his own career reach the same kind of success.
