20. LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, San Diego Chargers

This past August, LaDainian Tomlinson gave a stirring, important and emotional speech in Canton, Ohio during his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His profound words about life and today’s world in general are worth another listen if you didn’t catch it the first time.

That’s Tomlinson away from the game. On the field, the fifth-overall pick in 2001 from Texas Christian University was simply amazing during his days with both the San Diego Chargers and the New York Jets. His production was off the charts, ranking fifth in NFL history with 13,684 yards on the ground and fifth in league annals with 18,456 total yards from scrimmage. Only fellow Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (208) and Emmitt Smith (175) have reached the end zone more than Tomlinson (162).

The other L.T. was part of six playoff teams with the Bolts (5) and Jets (1) but only ever got as close as the conference championship game in both 2007 and ’10 – the latter with New York. He was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player with the Chargers in 2006 when he scored an amazing 31 touchdowns. And don’t forget he threw seven touchdown passes in his first seven seasons with San Diego.

Still, Tomlinson’s amazing career did not include a conference championship win, much less a Super Bowl title. It’s safe to say it wasn’t for a lack of trying when it comes to one of the game’s greatest offensive weapons.
