30 greatest players to never win a Super Bowl
11. Tony Gonzalez, TE, Kansas City Chiefs
He’s not yet eligible to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame but you get a pretty good idea he will be making plans to be in Canton, Ohio, soon enough. In case you’re wondering, tight end Tony Gonzalez played 17 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons from 1997-2013. Which means he would be a member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2019 at the earliest. And many would bet on the earliest.
The numbers are amazing, especially when it comes to production. Only the magnificent Jerry Rice (1,549) has more career receptions than the former University of California specimen. Gonzalez’s 1,325 catches came with the Chiefs (916) and then the Falcons (409). They amounted to 15,127 yards (sixth in league history) and 111 touchdown grabs. That latter figure has been topped by only six players in NFL annals. He totaled at least 70 receptions in 14 seasons and missed only two games during his career.
However, postseason success eluded the star performer. He played in only seven playoff games during his career and only once did his team (Falcons in 2012) come out victorious. In those postseason contests, Gonzalez was good for 30 catches, 286 yards and four scores.
There have been few players at his or any other position with his kind of athleticism. A former basketball star at Cal, the 14-time Pro Bowlers and six-time All-Pro came within one victory of a Super Bowl appearance during his next-to-last season in the league.
