NFL fans react to Saints hiring Dennis Allen to replace Sean Payton
By Ethan Lee
The New Orleans Saints officially have their next head coach. Rather than going with someone new, they picked a familiar face in Dennis Allen.
Well, there aren’t any head coaching vacancies remaining in the NFL as the New Orleans Saints have officially found Sean Payton’s successor.
Rather than bringing in someone who could be innovative on offense or move the franchise in a new direction, the Saints ended up choosing Dennis Allen, who is their current defensive coordinator.
Allen isn’t necessarily a bad choice, he’s been around in New Orleans for years and has some head coaching experience on his résumé. The biggest knock on him is that he wasn’t successful as a head coach previously. Allen only ended up going 8-28 before being fired by the Oakland Raiders.
That said, Allen has been a successful defensive coordinator and has been able to learn from Payton since then. Maybe he’s a better fit this time around.
Following the news breaking online, Twitter is sounding off on the news.
Twitter reacts after New Orleans Saints name Dennis Allen next head coach
Allen is familiar with the franchise. He knows the culture and is known by the current roster. He’ll need to figure out what the offense is going to look like, but his defense already has the potential to be solid and can be a decent foundation to build off of.
There’s a chance that Allen will pan out to be better than he was in Oakland, but that’s a pretty low bar to clear. Maybe the Saints are the right franchise for him to help lead. Maybe his familiarity with this roster will help Allen find more success.
There’s always the chance that Allen won’t be any good as a head coach once again. Still, he’s not a risky hire. The Saints have a decent idea of what he brings to the table. There may have been better candidates out there, but hiring Allen isn’t the worst thing ever.

Any New Orleans fans who are upset here could simply look a few hours west and see everything that is unravelling with the Houston Texans. At least Saints fans aren’t rooting for a team as dysfunctional as Cal McNair’s team.
