The only reason Randall Cobb is a Packer again is because Aaron Rodgers said so

After spending two years away from the Packers, former Pro Bowl wide receiver Randall Cobb returned for a second stint with the team last year. His return to Green Bay had everything to do with appeasing a frustrated Aaron Rodgers. While it remains to be seen if Rodgers will stay, go or retire after winning his second consecutive NFL MVP, Cobb is making way too much money now.

Cobb is coming off his worst season since his rookie year out of Kentucky over a decade ago. However, he stands to be over a $9.53 million cap hit for the Packers, equating to 4.52 percent of their overall space. While he would be a $2.783 million dead cap hit if released at the start of the league year, that number would drop significantly to only $1.39 million if it happened post June 1.

Ultimately, this is a tricky situation for the Packers. If Rodgers bails, then the Packers should cut bait with Cobb. Should Rodgers drag this thing out past free agency, through the draft and into the summer, they might need to stand pat with Cobb. Cutting him post June 1 may happen anyway, but the last thing the Packers want to do is ruffle Rodgers’ feathers if he is indeed coming back.

If it were not for the Rodgers connection, cutting Cobb would be an easy way to save some space.
