Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft – Third Round

Pick Analysis. SS. Miami. 123. Scouting Report. Bubba Bolden. 88. player

The other big area that the Dallas Cowboys would love to address in the draft is the safety position. Their current starting safety duo of Jayron Kearse and Donovan Wilson is nothing special, which is an issue when Quinn’s coverage schemes work best with excellent safety play.

The Cowboys may look to take advantage of a strong free safety pool in free agency, where the likes of Jessie Bates, Marcus Williams and Tyrann Mathieu could hit the market. That does leave a hole at strong safety to address, which Dallas can do by taking Bubba Bolden with this pick.

Bolden is a strong run defender capable of playing at all three levels of the defense, making him an ideal fit in Quinn’s system. Scouts also like the fact that Bolden has the athleticism to cover receivers even if he doesn’t have the top-end speed that some of the NFL’s elite safeties possess.

There are also questions about Bolden’s vision and coverage instincts, areas that would require development from the coaching staff. Bolden would ideally play behind a guy like Kearse, who Dallas could retain on a short-term deal, before eventually becoming a starter in a year or two.
