Juwan Howard will be suspended for the remainder of Michigan’s regular-season following an on-court altercation on Sunday.

Howard was involved in a verbal altercation with Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard and then struck assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft.

The Big Ten Conference released a statement shortly after the suspension was announced. Howard is being fined $40,000, with Gard receiving a $10,000 fine. Additionally, Wisconsin student-athlete Jahcobi Neath and Michigan players Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabate were handed one-game suspensions.

“Big Ten Conference coaches and student-athletes are expected to display the highest level of sportsmanship conduct,” said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren in the conference’s official statement. “I am grateful for the partnership with Michigan Athletics Director, Warde Manuel and Wisconsin Athletics Director, Chris McIntosh. Our expectation is that the incident yesterday will provide our coaches and student-athletes with the opportunity to reflect, learn and move forward in a manner that demonstrates decorum and leadership on and off of the court.”

Howard also released a statement following the announcement of his suspension, apologizing for the incident. You can read it below, courtesy of The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn.

At the very end of the game, Gard called a timeout with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. When the final buzzer sounded to give the Badgers the 77-63 win, Howard said “I’ll remember that,” when he was approached by Gard at the handshake line. Gard then grabbed Howard’s arm, which he took exception to. As a crowd convened, Howard struck Krabbenhoft in the face.

After the game, Howard said that he did not like that Gard called a timeout in the closing seconds of the contest and said that he was protecting himself.

Howard is now out for Michigan’s final five regular-season games against Rutgers, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa and Ohio State.
