Once the MLB lockout comes to an end, could the St. Louis Cardinals end up signing Kyle Schwarber?

MLB fans want the lockout to end so teams can get ready for the regular season to arrive, but there’s also plenty of free agents who are ready to find new homes. Most of the attention has gone to Freddie Freeman and Carlos Correa, but don’t forget about Kyle Schwarber.

The veteran slugger figures to draw plenty of attention here soon. According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, the St. Louis Cardinals will be a team to watch for the left fielder.

The St. Louis Cardinals could make a run to sign Kyle Schwarber

Per Bowden, a three-year deal for $54 million would make sense for the two sides here. If that were to happen, you already know that countless Chicago Cubs fans would be devastated to see that go down. Schwarber remains loved in the Windy City, as he spent the first six years of his career with the club.

Ahead of the 2021 season, he signed a new deal with the Washington Nationals, but eventually made his way to the Boston Red Sox. Last season, Schwarber hit .266 with 33 homers and 71 RBI. He’d be a great addition for any team’s lineup.

For the Cardinals, they’re hoping to bounce back after a disappointing 2021. St. Louis went 90-72 in the regular season and grabbed an NL Wild Card spot, but they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in that Wild Card Game. Just like that, their season was over.

This team feels like it’s only a couple pieces away from getting over the top and being in a position to go on a deep postseason run. Adding Schwarber would definitely excite the fanbase. We’ll see if something ends up going down.
