3. Free agent targets for the Dallas Cowboys – Stephon Gilmore

Another area of Quinn’s defense that could use an upgrade is the cornerback spot. Trevon Diggs had a breakout year for Dallas but the Cowboys could make a play to improve on the other side of the field since Anthony Brown could become a salary cap casualty.

The typical mold for this kind of replacement is a proven veteran who may be on the way down and is looking for a winning situation to rebuild his value. The player who fits that mold on the free agent market is Stephon Gilmore, who was a star for the New England Patriots in recent years before being awkwardly dealt to the Carolina Panthers in the middle of the 2021 season.

Gilmore showed flashes of his old form but is likely seeking a short-term deal on the free-agent market this offseason. That would play well for Dallas, which would create a dynamic cornerback duo on the outside while adding a player with championship experience to a locker room that hasn’t experienced a ton of playoff success.

There will be a lot of competition for Gilmore, who is arguably the most accomplished corner on the market that won’t receive a franchise tag. The Cowboys should do whatever it takes within reason to ensure that Gilmore is wearing a star on his helmet in 2022.
