Kim Mulkey has found instant success with the LSU women’s basketball program, but she refuses to fall into the trap that Sam Ehlinger and Texas football did.

Texas football still isn’t back. Apparently LSU women’s basketball isn’t back either.

Kim Mulkey, the head coach of the Tigers, has been wildly successful since making the move to Baton Rouge. The former Baylor Bears head coach has been able to have a strong first season with the Tigers as LSU is 25-4 and fresh off a win over Tennessee.

Following that win over Tennessee, Mulkey made it clear that LSU isn’t “back” by pointing out how foolish it would be if someone were to boldly declare that following a big win.

Like, you know, a certain Texas quarterback a few years ago.

In case you forgot, Sam Ehlinger, then the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, boldly declared that Texas football was back after the Longhorns managed to beat the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl at the end of the 2018 season.

Texas finished that 2018 season at 10-4, but took some steps back the following seasons. In 2019, Texas went 8-5 and the Longhorns finished at 7-3 in 2020.

Needless to say, Texas wasn’t back. The Longhorns still aren’t back. They’re on a new head coach and have since lost to the Kansas Jayhawks in Austin.

Ehlinger has since become a meme and the prime example for why some players, coaches, fans, and teams shouldn’t make overly bold predictions. The Longhorns have been a mess of a program for much of the past decade and a few brief moments of fun doesn’t mean they are what they once were.

Mulkey is wise to help temper expectations with her program. She’s also wise to point out how there’s still work to be done.
