New Vikings GM hints at potential interest in draft QB
By Mark Powell
Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah compared this year’s draft class to 2017, which produced the likes of Patrick Mahomes.
Adofo-Mensah, of course, has Kirk Cousins as his starting signal-caller moving forward. The new GM and his choice for head coach, Kevin O’Connell, had backed Cousins as their long-term starter, though every now and then we see cracks in that argument.
At the NFL Combine, Adofo-Mensah gave his first inclination that the Vikings could select a quarterback in this year’s class.
To be fair, though, that class wasn’t criticized because of Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, but due to the rest of the group — namely Mitchell Trubisky, DeShone Kizer, Nate Peterman, shall I go on?
Could Vikings draft a quarterback in the first round?
O’Connell’s latest commentary on the Vikings QB depth made it sound like he’s not satisfied.
“Training camp is a long way in my mind from a standpoint of what any position may look like,” O’Connell said.
The Vikings coach went on to praise Cousins, quickly realizing that his comment would be taken out of context.
“I love Kirk Cousins, I do. I think he’s clearly shown in this league the skillset, the intangibles at the quarterback position to play at a high level,” O’Connell continued.
The Vikings selected Kellen Mond out of Texas A&M is last season’s draft class. Sure, he was selected by the previous regime, but he remains a potential QB of the future if the Vikings prefer.
It would be a surprise for the Vikings to select a quarterback early, or even in Day 2, unless one of the top prospects fall into their lap. Expect Adofo-Mensah to do his due diligence, but Cousins is under contract for another year and this class doesn’t necessarily offer the same promise as next year.
