The World Surf League will be honoring female athletes for International Women’s Day with names on contest jerseys.

The athletes of the World Surf League will be taking to the water for their third stop on the Championship Tour. The third event of the 2022 season will be the MEO Pro Portugal at the world-famous Praia de Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal. The men and women will be doing something very special at this stop — they will be wearing the names of women in sports who inspire them.

The athletes will be honoring different female athletes from all different sports on the backs of their contest jerseys. The side of the jerseys will be patched with an International Women’s Day emblem. March is Women’s History Month and March 8 is International Women’s Day.

Among the names to be worn are Naomi Osaka, Lisa Andersen, Ronda Rousey, Michelle Kwan, Bethany Hamilton, and more.

The MEO Pro Portugal event kicks off with opening rounds for both men and women on March 3. Included in the competition are current world number 5 ranked Johanne Defay and last year’s champion Carrissa Moore. For the men, Kelly Slater hopes to carry on his momentum for winning the Billabong Pro Pipeline.
