1. How does the defense adjust to Dan Lanning’s departure to the Oregon Ducks?

It was expected that Georgia was going to lose Dan Lanning to a head-coaching opportunity, but for him to get the Oregon gig, good for him. Lanning is the latest branch of the Kirby Smart coaching tree to sprout and he should have a ton of success taking over for Mario Cristobal over in Eugene. However, it cannot be overstated how important he was to last year’s team’s defense.

Stepping up to the plate to be co-defensive coordinators are Will Muschamp and Glenn Schumann. While Muschamp has a proven track record as an elite defensive mind, this is Schumann’s first opportunity in a high-profile role such as this. Lanning thrived taking over for Mel Tucker, but how the Georgia defense evolves without Lanning will signify if this year’s team can actually repeat.

The clearest pathway towards success is for the secondary to be elite. It very well could, as this is Smart and Muschamp’s position group of strength. Though Georgia has continued to recruit unlike most programs in the Power Five, it is imperative for the linebacking corps under Schumann’s direction to be the other focal point of this defense. There is too much talent for it to stagnate.

Georgia has to accept last year’s defense was last year, while embracing these new machinations.
