NFL free agency: 5 targets for Seahawks after Russell Wilson trade
By Scott Rogust
Now, we get to the quarterback position. This was already viewed as the worst possible time to be in need of a quarterback. The Seahawks entered the conversation after trading Wilson to the Broncos. Yes, they did receive Drew Lock in the deal, but he is not a feasible starting option for the team.
The Seahawks do hold the ninth-overall pick in the upcoming draft and could very well take a quarterback there. Or, they can choose to punt that draft decision to 2023 and opt to sign a stop-gap signal caller for the 2022 season. If that is the path Seattle chooses, they should be targeting Jameis Winston, who is a top-tier option in the quarterback class.
Winston is notorious for his 30-for-30 season in 2019, which forced the hand of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to move on from him and ultimately sign Tom Brady in free agency. Winston stayed in the NFC South, opting to sign with the New Orleans Saints, where he took over for Drew Brees in 2021.
While he did not light up the stat-sheets, Winston was solid when starting under center for the Saints. Through seven games, Winston completed 59.0-percent of his passes for 1,170 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Winston is coming off a season-ending knee injury, but he is the best available unrestricted free agent. One positive for Winston to sign with Seattle is that he will have D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Noah Fant to throw to. This is an upgrade of the lackluster wide receiver group that the Saints had last season due to the injury to Michael Thomas.
