NFL rumors: 3 teams that should trade for Baker Mayfield
By John Buhler
A rebuilding Seattle Seahawks team is the best spot to resurrect his NFL career
Even though the Seattle Seahawks have a potential stop-gap starter in Drew Lock after trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, Mayfield is better than him. Yes, the Seahawks have the No. 9 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by way of the Broncos trade, but whatever quarterback they take with that selection is probably not ready to start. Mayfield would be a free agent in 2023.
By going to Seattle, it would be an audition for him to the other 30 franchises in the NFL. Not only that, but he would be playing in the same offense that his other boyhood idol Wilson used to play in. No, Seattle is not going to be anything close to a playoff team with him on the squad, but he can quietly figure out how the second half of his NFL career goes by playing in relative obscurity.
As with the Falcons or Saints, the Seahawks play in the other conference. This means if he somehow has success in Seattle, it will not be as punitive to the Browns as it would if he had success with the Colts or another AFC franchise. If he was traded to Seattle, it would be more in the vein of being traded to Atlanta, than to Indianapolis or New Orleans in terms of competitiveness.
A year in Seattle could do Mayfield a world of good, as he looks to rebuild his quarterback image.
