1. Alonzo Mourning (2003-2004)

Alonzo Mourning signed with the Nets as a free agent in 2003. The deal included $22.6 million over four years. The Nets were fresh off two straight NBA Finals appearances and thought the addition of Mourning would keep that momentum going and lead to an actual Finals win.

Before signing with the Nets, Mourning expressed excitement about the possibility of playing alongside Jason Kidd, as per ESPN.

"“I want to win. Jason wants to win,” Mourning said, responding to a question about the possibility of playing with Kidd. “Who wouldn’t want to play with Jason Kidd? Come on, man, he’s the best point guard in the league. If you’re a player and you’re worth anything, obviously you would want to play with a point guard like Jason Kidd.”"

Mourning was averaging 20 points a game in his first couple of seasons of playing for the Heat. However, his numbers did dip in his final two seasons as a Heat. Mourning would miss the entire 2002-03 season because of his kidney disease.

After signing with the Nets, Mourning played in just 12 games averaging eight points, and 2.2 rebounds before announcing he was retiring from basketball because of his medical condition. He would later undergo a successful kidney transplant and return to the team for the start of the 2004 season. Mourning would play in18 games, averaging 10 points and 7 rebounds before being traded to the Raptors for Vince Carter.
