Round 4: Kellen Diesch

It’s highly unlikely that the Steelers can find a player capable of playing significant snaps at tackle at this late stage of the draft. They’re going to need to gamble on a guy who might be able to grow into a starter and Diesch fits that bill.

Critics of the former Arizona State star will correctly point out that he doesn’t play with much power at the point of attack. He’s much better as a finesse pass blocker than he is at a run blocker. Ironically, that’s what gives him the chance to outperform this draft slot if everything goes right.

The immediate hope for Diesch at the next level is that he can provide depth as a swing tackle. He’s got the pass-blocking chops not to kill the Steelers’ offensive line as a rookie. If he can find a way to play with adequate power at the point of attack then his ceiling as a pro will rise dramatically.

Nothing about Diesch screams star, but finding a decent tackle in Round 4 would be a win for Pittsburgh’s front office. It’s definitely a position the organization could target earlier in the draft, but other needs trump tackle in this particular mock.
