Round 3: Troy Andersen, LB, Montana State

The Packers should go for defense again in Round 3 to add some athleticism at the second level. Andersen’s lack of experience at linebacker makes him a bit of a project, but the upside is worth the gamble at this juncture in the draft.

Andersen played quarterback, running back, and linebacker at various times during his tenure at Montana State. That illustrates his college coaching staff’s belief that they needed to get the ball in the hands of an athlete like Andersen at every opportunity.

The Packers’ defensive staff can work to harness Andersen’s speed and quickness to make plays on the other side of the ball. He flashed good coverage skills and the ability to be a solid hitter on his college film. The challenge for Andersen will be catching up to the mental side of the game after playing so many positions in college.

Green Bay might be tempted to go for a more ready-made impact player here, but Andersen is the sort of gamble they should be taking in the middle rounds. It might take him half of a season to get up and running but the payoff could be big for the Packers come playoff time.
