The Mets will also DFA Sean Reid-Foley while they’re at it

The Mets have an interesting bullpen when it comes to minor league options. Only two guys presently in there can be sent down without having to be designated for assignment. One of them is Seth Lugo. The other we’ll get to later on.

Lugo isn’t getting reassigned to the minor leagues. Neither will Sean Reid-Foley, an out-of-options middle reliever who hasn’t pitched particularly well during his time with the Mets.

Reid-Foley came to the Mets prior to the 2021 season in the Steven Matz trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. A starter turned reliever once joining New York, he has been the quintessential mop-up man to appear mostly in blowouts for either team. The Mets have already DFA’d one of the other pitchers they acquired for Matz, Yennsy Diaz. Reid-Foley’s time is coming.

Of everyone in the bullpen, Reid-Foley is the most likely to lose his roster spot. He is easily replaceable. And with Trevor Williams around to give them multiple innings as a truer long man, there really is far less of a purpose for keeping him around.

The only chance Reid-Foley has at being on the Mets roster by May 1 is if someone gets injured. Even then, unless he pitches well, the club could still find a way to move on.
