5 Mets players who won’t be on the roster by May 1

Drew Smith is one Mets player who may be unjustly sent to the minor leagues
Drew Smith is probably going to see minor league action this season for the simple fact that he has minor league options. Yep, along with Seth Lugo, Smith is one of only two Mets relievers who can be sent to the minor leagues without the team putting his place with the organization at risk.
The May 1 deadline won’t have too much of an effect on Smith except for the fact that the Mets may want to stall until they figure out which arms they are ready to completely move on from.
Smith has pitched well in his limited big-league career which has been slowed down due to injuries. This season should provide him with more opportunities to crawl up the depth chart and get much bigger innings. Unfortunately, as many teams have to do during the course of the season, sometimes they need to balance the roster by sending the wrong guy down.
Smith’s spot on the Mets is important because it can allow them to send him to the minors (even just temporarily) and bring in a fresh arm. Any stint he may have in Triple-A should be short-lived. He is one of their younger relievers and quite possibly one of their better ones, too.
The Mets have had trouble building up talented young relievers in their farm system in recent years. Lugo and Smith are it. Sadly for Smith, it could cost him a few days in the big leagues.
