1. Luka Doncic

Doncic’s injury is the No. 1 headline for the Western Conference heading into Round 1. The Mavericks are “skeptical” that he can play in the opener against the Jazz which gives Utah a terrific opportunity to steal Game 1 on the road.

The real question becomes just how quickly Doncic can come back from the strained calf he suffered in the regular-season finale. He’s not overly dependent on quickness, but he can’t afford to lose a step either. If he comes back at anything less than 100 percent it shifts the odds of Dallas’ first-round series significantly.

The Mavericks just don’t have the surrounding talent required to stay afloat without their offensive talisman. Spencer Dinwiddie and Jalen Brunson are nice supporting pieces but they can’t carry the offensive load like Doncic can.

As such, Doncic’s ability to return from injury gives him the ability to be the Western Conference’s No. 1 x-factor heading into the postseason. If he comes back healthy then Dallas is a legitimate threat to make a deep run. If he doesn’t, they’re going to be blitzed by Utah in Round 1.
