5 teams that should trade for Kyler Murray after talks break down
By John Buhler
The Houston Texans are a sneaky-good fit for a quarterback like Kyler Murray
The more you think about it, the more a potential trade between the Cardinals and the Houston Texans makes sense. Houston may be comfortable in developing Davis Mills and seeing what he can be. However, he was so raw coming out of Stanford that he fell to the third round a year ago. The Texans have two top-15 picks, as well as Mills if they want to bring Murray to the Gulf Coast.
While defensive-minded Love Smith will probably be the Texans’ head coach for the next few years, Houston also employs an on-the-rise offensive coordinator in Pep Hamilton. Factor in the Texans playing in the weakest division in the AFC, and you can understand why Houston is a very viable landing spot for Murray. Unfortunately, Houston is still a few years away from competing.
For a long-term perspective, it does make sense for the native Texan to go and play for the Texans.
The Carolina Panthers are the most quarterback-desperate team in the NFL
Despite missing out on former Clemson star Deshaun Watson, the Carolina Panthers have no future at quarterback presently. Sam Darnold is not the guy. While Carolina could be the first team to take a quarterback at No. 6 overall in this month’s draft, no prospect is as promising as what Murray was coming out of Oklahoma three years ago. For the right price, he can be the Panthers’.
What makes the Panthers desperate is if they do not win in 2022, Matt Rhule will be going back to college. Newish owner David Tepper likes to take big swings in his professional life, so giving up the farm to get a talented playmaker like Murray is right in his wheelhouse. While Murray might be the best quarterback in the NFC South in two seasons, he at least makes the Panthers interesting.
A package centered around the No. 6 overall pick may entice the Cardinals to pull the trigger here.
