Pitching

The Cardinals have gotten decent outings from Adam Wainwright, Miles Mikolas, Steven Matz and Dakota Hudson. Jordan Hicks is the apparent fifth starter, and while the former closer, he did have a good outing in his start against the Cincinnati Red.

Marmol is using the bullpen based on matchups and has seen good outings from Andre Pallante, Jake Woodford, and Genesis Cabrera. Giovanny Gallegos has been fairly solid as a closing pitcher, but doesn’t have the role solidly in hand.

According to reporting from Jeff Jones, John Mozeliak believes they may have a better idea of what to expect from Jack Flaherty and Alex Reyes in mid-May.  According to MLB.com’s John Denton, the team is pleased with Flaherty’s progress and will be looking to get him a rehab start in the minors soon.

It will be good to have Flaherty back and hopefully at full strength and the ace fans know him to be. Reyes’ role was going to be in flux this season, so it will be good to see him take his time in coming back to form.

One more starter or long-reliever and a closing caliber arm would have been good to have going into this season. It will be interesting to see how this turns out and what if anything the Cardinals will have to do to improve things.
