2. White Sox prospect Jose Rodriguez has an unclear major league path

Shortstop prospect Jose Rodriguez won’t turn 21 until May and is already one of the best prospects the White Sox have. He has actually been with the franchise since 2018, slowly climbing up to become their number three prospect according to MLB.com.

However, Rodriguez has a problem. The number one prospect the team has is Colson Montgomery, another young shortstop. What’s more, the big league club has Tim Anderson. What’s a young prospect to do?

Chicago could always move one to second base—the path many young shortstops ultimately take as they near the big leagues. There’s also third base, the outfield, and practically anywhere else. There’s also no telling how well Anderson will age at shortstop. Perhaps he ends up moving positions.

This year, Rodriguez looks like he could be dangled out there by the White Sox to get better now. He hasn’t hit particularly well at Double-A, going 11 for his first 56. Could this be the wall in his career that he is unable to climb over?

The White Sox have a nice core of players made up of many younger players they’ve brought up through the system. Those guys came to the organization in a variety of ways either through the draft, amateur free agency, or trades. Eventually, the White Sox may need to reduce their talent on the farm. Rodriguez is one of those talented young prospects we could see them flip.
