2) Yankees pitching prospect Hayden Wesneski

A sixth-round draft pick by the club back in 2019, Hayden Wesneski has quietly become one of the better Yankees pitching prospects. Now in Triple-A and only a single phone call away from his MLB debut, fans should be prepared to see him in Pinstripes this year.

Through four starts, Wesneski is 0-2 with a 2.37 ERA. He’s coming off of a season where he went 11-6 with a 3.26 ERA during stints in Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. Now on the map as a future pitcher for the club, his exact role remains unknown.

The Yankees have gotten a lot from their starters early on this year. No one looks in danger of getting moved the bullpen, demoted, or shoved into the bullpen. In fact, the Yankees have even gotten good innings out of Michael King and Clarke Schmidt in relief. Either of them could be regarded as higher than Weneski on the depth chart to make starts.

This year, Wesneski’s chance to pitch in the big leagues could always come as a result of a doubleheader, injury, or the need for an arm in the bullpen. It’s not uncommon whatsoever for a starting pitching prospect to get his feet wet as a reliever.

Not in Wesneski’s favor: he has yet to make his way onto the 40-man roster. However, New York can rectify this if he gives them no other choice. He’ll need to outpitch fellow prospects Deivi Garcia and Luis Gil. Through four starts, Garcia is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA with Gil performing even worse at 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA.
