Red Sox: 5 players who should already be on the trade block
2. Xander Bogaerts
With Xander Bogaerts already in the fold playing shortstop, it was quite surprising the team opted to sign Trevor Story. A career shortstop, they moved Story to second base where he has -2 defensive runs saved after a career of 69 defensive runs saved at shortstop. He is currently hitting .236/.311/.309 with a +85 wRC.
What does this mean for Bogaerts?
Bogaerts has a six-year contract worth $120 million that ends in 2025. He can opt-out of the deal after the 2022 season. He does have a vesting option in 2026. Story has a six-year deal worth $140M through 2027. There is a club option in 2028. Story can opt out after 2025 which the club can void by exercising his 2028 option.
Looking at the two deals, it is curious what the Red Sox were and could be thinking with the structuring. It will be interesting to see if Bogaerts is possibly traded out of fear of him exercising the opt-out after this season. The Red Sox could want to make sure they get something in return for Bogaerts if he opts out. The Red Sox would definitely warrant a huge return in trading Bogaerts.
