NHL Draft Lottery 2022 results: Who won the No. 1 overall pick?
By Josh Hill
The NHL Draft Lottery was on Tuesday, and we now know what the top half of the first round is as non-playoff teams prepare for their future.
It’s two very contrasting times of the year in the NHL. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full swing and teams (except for the Nashville Predators) are fighting for perhaps the most coveted trophy in all of professional sports.
That’s not totally hyperbole. While NFL is no doubt king in North America and none among the living were alive in a time when baseball wasn’t a thing, neither the Lombardi nor World Series trophy carries the sort of live-or-die journey that trying to win a Stanley Cup requires.
So the saying goes, why do cocaine when you can just watch playoff hockey?
But only 16 teams (well 15, sorry again Preds fans) are in this very special and high-octane group. While it’s a drive for a championship for half of the league, it’s offseason mode for the other half.
Tuesday’s NHL Draft Lottery marks the unofficial start of the offseason. With the draft order set, teams can now begin to strategize how they will go from sitting at home this time of year to being one of those teams trying to reach hockey’s promised land.

NHL Mock Draft 2022: Who will be the No. 1 pick?
We know who will be picking No. 1 overall in the NHL Draft in July, but the question now becomes who will be the name read at the podium?
Like years before, the choice seems to be predetermined. This year that guy is Shane Wright, the 18-yeard old two-way center who plays for the WHL’s Kingston Frontenacs at the moment. That time is borrowed, however, as Wright is not only expected to be the first selection of this year’s draft but he’s been a consensus choice for a number of years.
Talk about pressure.
Wright’s hype has been years in the making but he’s not the only name worth paying attention to heading into the NHL Draft. Finland’s Juraj Slafkovsky, Czech’s David Jiricek, and Slovakia’s Simon Nemec are all expected to be picked in the Top 5, while Logan Cooley and Cutter Gauthier are looking to carry on the growing presence of top American players in the NHL.
When is the NHL Draft 2022?
The NHL Draft will take place on July 7th and July 8th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. The location of this year’s draft was determined before the Canadiens won the No. 1 overall pick, so the fact that they’re picking first and hosting the event is pure coincidence.
