Edmundo Sosa

Edmundo Sosa has been on the injured list due to a COVID-related illness. He played Tuesday evening with the Cardinals AA affiliate Springfield Cardinals.

In his game, he had two hits and one run. He was also hit by a pitch. He hit .500/.600/.500. Not bad, but again, it was with the AA affiliate. In 10 games with the Cardinals this season, he was hitting .160/.350/.160 with one stolen base. Unfortunately, he does have a strikeout rate of 42.9 percent.

Last season, Sosa took over as a shortstop during Paul DeJong’s struggles. He had eight defensive runs saved in 2021 to DeJong’s six and Sosa has one DRS in 2022 compared with DeJong’s four this season.

If Sosa succeeds during DeJong’s stay in Memphis, he could either take over the spot for good or become a prime candidate to flip if he and DeJong both see improvement. Sosa has an important few weeks ahead of him.

Sosa is arbitration-eligible in 2024.
