Braves rumors: Vaughn Grissom is the shortstop prospect to trade if Atlanta intends to re-sign Xander Bogaerts
The Braves do have some notable shortstop prospects on the farm. Ranked seventh in the system according to MLB.com with an ETA as soon as 2023, Vaughn Grissom would fit in well with what the Red Sox are trying to do: not completely tank and give themselves a chance to get back into the playoff picture pretty quickly.
Grissom is only 21-years-old and has shown some promising signs down on the farm. Through almost 700 professional plate appearances, he is a .307/.401/.442 hitter with limited pop. Things like home run power can come later on in the career of many. Not a deterrent in any way, he is someone the Braves could view as expendable in an upgrade for Bogaerts.
Atlanta happens to have another young shortstop, Braden Shewmake, ranked sixth on their farm. A little more seasoned and at the Triple-A level this year, he has batted .320/.374/.454 through his first 107 plate appearances this year with Gwinnett. The Braves may want to hold onto Shewmake a little more. He gives them some insurance just in case they do hope to re-sign Bogaerts and he ends up leaving.
There’s no real need for the Braves to have both Grissom and Shewmake especially with Ozzie Albies at second base and Austin Riley at third base. Now may be the time to decide which one they want to keep on the farm. For a chance at Bogaerts and to defend their title, Grissom is the better asset to deal.
