Red Sox trade candidate Enrique Hernandez could be a “change of scenery” player

Enrique Hernandez’s year has started off poorly but that doesn’t mean teams won’t come calling about him. The sparkplug veteran with a whole bunch of versatility had a fine year for Boston in 2021 when he batted .250/.337/.449 with 20 home runs and 60 RBI. He has come a long way from his glory days with the Los Angeles Dodgers providing them with depth at every position imaginable.

Far less of a star than Martinez or Eovaldi, Hernandez is the kind of player teams should seek to fill out their bench. His early struggles in Boston could inevitably end his time as an everyday player moving forward. He has a track record of playing well in a part-time role which may be exactly how he finishes off his year.

Based on what they did last year, the Atlanta Braves might be a fit for Hernandez. They built up a club midseason with a whole lot of chemistry and it got them a World Series. The division rival Philadelphia Phillies could always look at him, too. They would actually have a great need to start in him center field. Of course, both teams need to start winning before they start buying.

Hernandez’s contract is over at the end of the year. Trading him, for even a low-level minor leaguer, is the right thing for Boston to do.
