4. Explore trading Tobias Harris (again)

It came up again. Jimmy Butler made it very clear he felt the Philadelphia 76ers chose Tobias Harris over himself in the 2019 offseason. It’s pretty clear the Sixers actually chose Al Horford over Butler, which arguably was a worse decision. Butler is thriving in Miami, Ben Simmons (who was reportedly not getting along with Butler) is now in Brooklyn, and the 76ers are dealing with a version of Tobias Harris that is barely noticeable.

Harris averaged 17.2 points per game this season. That’s his lowest total since his time with the Detroit Pistons. It was clear he trusted his own jumper a little less, averaging just 13.5 shots per game in the playoffs. Something is off with Harris, and it’s probably best for everyone to move on. The 76ers will likely try to unload the player in the offseason to give themselves a little bit of a reset.

However, who is going to pay what’s necessary for Harris? Does he really have any value? He’s making $37 million next season and $39 million the year after. This contract is insane. How did he talk the Sixers into giving him this deal? The ownership group has to hate the idea of paying this deal on top of Harden’s. Will the Sixers have to add assets just to get someone to buy this deal off of their books?

This is a bad situation to be in if you’re the Sixers. Harris is also going to turn 30 years old next season, and the downside is on the horizon. He could turn it around, but it sounds like he has to do it outside of Philadelphia. Maybe the Sixers can find another star that’s looking for a change of scenery like Harris, and they could make a deal.
