Has Jordan Spieth ever won the PGA Championship?

Jordan Spieth is one of the contenders to take home the Wanamaker Trophy at the Southern Hills Country Club for the 104th PGA Championship. It’s the only silverware he’s missing among his three major victories. His second-place finish in 2015 was the closest he ever came.

2015 was a seminal year for the 28-year-old golfer, who collected his first Masters Championship and U.S. Open in that same year and came within three shots at Whistling Straits—the home of the 2015 PGA tournament—of achieving a triumvirate of majors that year. Spieth came in third at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage.

But the PGA major is the only prize standing in the way of completing the career Grand Slam. If Spieth were to conquer that milestone at this year’s tournament, he would only be the sixth golfer in history to achieve the feat, including luminaries Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen. Nicklaus and Woods accomplished the career Grand Slam at ages 26 and 24. If Spieth followed suit this year, he would be the third youngest.

“If you just told me I was going to win one tournament the rest of my life, I’d say I want to win this one, given where things are at,” Jordan Spieth said, according to ESPN. “If you told me that before my career started I was going to win one tournament ever, I’d say the Masters because that was my favorite tournament growing up.

“But things change, and that has obviously significant meaning. Long term it would be really cool to say that you captured the four biggest golf tournaments in the world that are played in different parts of the world and different styles, too. So you feel like you kind of accomplished golf when you win a career Grand Slam, I guess.”

After years of struggle, the 13-time PGA Tour winner has found his form again in 2021 with a win at last year’s Valero Texas Open and last month’s US PGA Heritage. He came up runner-up at last week’s Dallas event, the PGA Byron Nelson. Ranked 8th, Jordan Spieth looks in strong contention going into this week’s major.

The PGA Championship starts Thursday, May 19.
