MLB rumors: Whit Merrifield makes sense for the Rays

Brandon Lowe has been placed on the injured list with lower back discomfort giving way to the Rays’ depth chart options a the position which includes Vidal Brujan, Taylor Wells and Isaac Paredes.

In eight games with the Rays, five of which were at second base, Brujan is hitting .125/.192/.196 with an OPS of +24. He’s been in the Rays system since 2015 and has one remaining option left with the club. Brujan is a versatile player with the ability to play anywhere in the outfield and most of the infield

Lowe’s injury was diagnosed as a stress reaction to the back, he could be out for at least a month before being re-evaluated. The Rays will be in desperate need of a veteran second baseman and a bat to compensate for the loss of Lowe.

Merrifield could be just the fit for a young team in need of veteran leadership. It is a certain the Rays will check in on Merrifield.
