MLB rumors: 5 favorites to trade for Whit Merrifield
MLB rumors: Whit Merrifield makes sense for the Mets
Because, of course, the New York Mets will be in consideration for the services of Merrifield. A veteran bat with a tremendous skill set and a restructured deal? This is prime for Mets owner Steve Cohen.
The Mets’ current second baseman, Jeff McNeil, is being paid a one-year deal worth $3 million. He’ll be arbitration-eligible in 2023 and a free agent in 2025. In 36 games, 24 of which were at second base, McNeil is hitting .312/.370/.424 with an OPS of +134 and one home run. He has one defensive run saved at the position after getting four in 2021.
The Mets made several additions to the team in the offseason. They released Robinson Cano after the season began. The team may not necessarily need a second baseman but could definitely use Merrfield’s presence in the infield, in the lineup and assuredly in the clubhouse, which is filled with youngsters that could use his guidance. Mets manager Buck Showalter would be appreciative.
