3. Mets pitcher Adonis Medina could transition back into a starter role

A savvy pickup for the Mets this offseason was the addition of Adonis Medina. Already appearing in three games and 6.1 innings for the big league club, he has yet to give up a run and has a 0.63 WHIP in the limited action.

On the farm, Medina has been productive as well. Through nine Triple-A innings including two starts and two relief appearances, Medina has a 2.00 ERA.

Prior to joining the Mets, Medina was a starting pitching prospect for the Philadelphia Phillies. Apparently, they were ready to move on from him after some rough years at the higher levels of the minor leagues. The transition to a relief role is probably for the best. However, the change of scenery and a shot with a new organization may be the right mix for what Medina needs to get back on track.

Medina should fall behind Williams and Szapucki on the depth chart of options. However, as a current member of the 40-man roster, he is someone the Mets should have in mind. The leash shouldn’t be too long for anyone. If the Mets want to remain in first place, it means tough love and pulling the ripcord early on when it looks like things aren’t going a pitcher’s way.
