The Preakness 2022 got a little bit of its luster taken away with Rich Strike deciding not to run but which horse won the second leg of the Triple Crown?

Horse racing fans always get excited for the trip to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD in late May for the Preakness Stakes. It’s the second leg of the illustrious Triple Crown and, as it comes just two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, fans of the sport and sports fans in general are all waiting to see if the winner of the first leg can get two-thirds of the way to the greatest honor in horse racing.

However, that wasn’t a possibility for the 2022 Preakness Stakes. Rich Strike, the winner at Churchill Downs, was removed from the billing for the race at Pimlico due to preparation for the Belmont Stakes, among other reasons. Thus, before the starting gun ever sounded, the bid for the Triple Crown was over.

That left Epicenter, the horse that finished top three at the Kentucky Derby as the favorite, as the favorite once again as he headed to the Preakness. But how did the race play out? Let’s take a look.

Early voting was able to come through as the second-highest favorite in the race, holding off a surging Epicenter on the inside down the home stretch of the race.

There was a bit of controversy to some as Early Voting cut hard to the inside but, ultimately, he was clear in the lead and weaved a bit naturally as tired horses often do.

That’s now two Triple Crown races in a row that Epicenter has been the favorite in only to come up short.
