Yankees trade targets, Luis Castillo

The Reds figure to be one of this year’s most motivated sellers, and Castillo should draw quite a strong bit of interest from a number of teams. While the Yankees’ rotation has been a strength for Boone this far into the regular season, no team can have enough quality starting pitchers heading down the stretch.

The Yankees expressed interest in Castillo during the offseason, but Cincinnati elected to stand firm on a pretty high asking price. If it drops at all this season, then New York will undoubtedly put themselves in a position to pounce.

Castillo has the sort of swing-and-miss stuff that really plays up in the postseason. He isn’t going to challenge Gerrit Cole to be the ace of New York’s staff, but there’s no reason to think he can’t slot in alongside the likes of Nester Cortes and Luis Severino in the next tier of Yankee starters.

The added benefit from New York in acquiring Castillo is that they can keep him away from one of their playoff rivals. He’s not a guy the Yankees want to face in October. That could force Cashman to outbid the competition for Castillo’s services.
