Astros should trade for division rival Frankie Montas

Frankie Montas will be traded this year. It’s just a matter of when and to which team. The Houston Astros would do well to throw their name in the hat to acquire the Oakland A’s ace. But he won’t come cheap.

Montas, along with Cincinnati Reds right-hander Luis Castillo, will be the two most popular starters on the market this summer. Both will not become free agents until after next season.

The top of the Astros’s rotation already has Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, and Luis Garcia, but adding Frankie Montas would make Houston’s starting rotation one of the best in baseball.

The problem with acquiring Montas will be the cost. Oakland knows how value a pitcher of Montas’ talent is, and they’re not going to let him go for just nothing. Furthermore, there will be several teams vying for Montas’ services.

Look for teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and others to be after the 29-year-old as the trade market begins to heat up. The Houston Astros should definitely keeps tabs on Montas, but I doubt they’ll want to enter a bidding war.
