1. Not re-signing Tyrann Mathieu

Kansas City’s biggest name heading into unrestricted free agency was safety Tyrann Mathieu. Since his arrival, Mathieu had helped improve the team’s defense. In his very first year, he played a role in the team winning the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years.

But after his third season with the team, Mathieu was set to become an unrestricted free agent. Mathieu did express his desire to remain with the team, most notably during a red carpet interview at the NFL Honors. But, as time passed, it looked less and less likely that the two would reunite.

Any chances of a return vanished once the team opted to sign Houston Texas safety Justin Reid to a $31.5 million contract. After that, it was only a matter of where Mathieu would sign. The answer was the New Orleans Saints, as he returns to where he grew up.

While Reid was a solid pickup for the Chiefs defense, losing Mathieu could be a move the team regrets.
