1. Release Baker Mayfield from contract altogether

This is essentially the Browns’ final option one that they will probably not want to utilize.

It has been reported early on in the offseason that the Browns have had a high asking price in trade talks for Mayfield. But their leverage has dropped drastically with most of the team’s quarterback situations set.

If the Browns were able to trade Mayfield, they would free up $18.9 million in cap space. But that’s the thing, it is not a given that a team will give the Browns a call to finalize a trade for the signal-caller.

With Watson facing discipline from the league for facing 23 civil lawsuits for sexual misconduct, he could very well miss games. Paired with Mayfield being on the outs with the Browns, they already have a backup quarterback with starter’s experience on the roster in Jacoby Brissett, who has a 14-23 win-loss record in his career.

The Browns could have no choice but to release Mayfield, but they would save no cap space and eat $18.9 million in dead money for the 2022 season. Even so, this is Cleveland’s last solution.
