Edmundo Sosa

Sosa has seen a lot of time at shortstop since DeJong was sent to Memphis. DeJong is heating up at Memphis just as the Cardinals have promoted prized prospect Nolan Gorman. With Gorman in St. Louis, the Cardinals have moved Gold Glove second baseman Tommy Edman to shortstop.

In addition to Sosa, Donovan has also had some time at various infield positions.

Sosa is hitting .215/.271/.277 with two doubles, a triple, 10 runs, and 14 RBI in 26 games. Donovan is hitting .297/.429/.419 with 15 singles, six doubles, a home run, 14 runs, and nine RBI in 30 games.

The Cardinals have a lot of options and will have decisions to make once DeJong is set to return. Marmol will not likely want to send Donovan back to Memphis. DeJong will be given the opportunity to secure his position at shortstop even with Edman playing the position with Gorman up. Edman and DeJong have played well together, and both are sure to mix well with Gorman and Donovan.

Sosa may get squeezed out just based on the amount of talent the Cardinals currently have with the big club. Unless Sosa’s production picks up, he could swap positions with DeJong in Memphis once the former All-Star shortstop is set to return.
