3. The Nationals could trade Carl Edwards Jr. at the deadline.

Don’t look now, but Carl Edwards Jr. is pitching like he did during the early part of his career with the Chicago Cubs. Edwards Jr. has made 14 appearances out of the Nats’ bullpen and opposing teams have only dented the plate three times.

Edwards Jr. enjoyed a fine career with the Cubs upon breaking into the major leagues. The right-handed reliever spent five seasons on the North Side and posted a 3.30 ERA with 234 punch outs over 170-plus innings with the Cubbies.

But the next few years were a bit nightmarish for Edwards Jr. After being traded to the San Diego Padres in 2019, Edwards Jr. struggled at many of his other stops between Chicago and Washington. In 2021, while splitting time between the Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves, Edwards Jr. posted an ERA of 11.12 in seven relief appearances.

This season, Carl Edwards Jr. seems to have rediscovered that breaking ball that helped him have so much success earlier in his career. Teams are always looking for bullpen help at the deadline and Edwards Jr. certainly fits the bill.
