After joining LIV Golf, will Phil Mickelson be playing in this week’s US Open?

Phil Mickelson will indeed be playing in the US Open Championship this week. The 51-year-old Mickelson is coming off a 33rd-place finish at LIV Golf’s first tournament which was held last week in London.

Despite all the controversy surrounding Mickelson and his decision to ditch the PGA Tour in favor of LIV Golf, the six-time major winner will tee it up on Thursday at The Country Club in Brookline.

Is Phil Mickelson playing in the US Open?

Phil Mickelson has caused quite the stir throughout the world of golf this year. After an incredible win at the PGA Championship last year at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort saw Mickelson become the oldest major champion, he was not on hand last month to defend his title at Southern Hills.

In fact, Mickelson and several other golfers have been suspended from playing in PGA Tour events after signing on with the rival LIV Golf. Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia were among the list of names suspended as well.

But, despite not being able to play in PGA Tour events, those players who were suspended by the PGA will be able to play in this week’s US Open. Why? Because the US Open is not a PGA event but is organized by U.S. Golf Association.

Has Phil Mickelson ever won the US Open?

While Phil Mickelson has six major championships to his name, the US Open has always eluded him. In fact, Lefty has finished in second place six times over his career. The one-stroke loss to Geoff Ogilvy in 2006 may be the most painful for Mickelson after taking a one-shot lead into the final hole.

Inexcusably, Phil Mickelson double-bogeyed the 18th hole and missed out on a playoff with Ogilvy. Mickelson would have two more opportunities to take home the USGA’s top prize but fell short again in both 2009 and 2013.

Is this the year that Mickelson finally breaks through and wins that elusive US Open Championship? After his performance at the PGA Championship in 2021, I guess it’s possible. However, Phil Mickelson’s last professional win was last May in South Carolina.
