US Open picks: Expert picks, best bets for The Country Club
US Open expert picks: Outright winner picks at The Country Club
Rory McIlroy (+1000)
Call it square but it’s time for the beast to be unleashed and that beast is one Rory McIlroy.
Fresh off of winning the RBC Canadian Open, the all-around game aspect needed to succeed at Brookline is there for Rory. His driver is as good as it’s ever been, he’s 20th on the PGA Tour this season in SG: Approach, and he’s also having the best short game season of his career. Throw in the clear motivation he’s displaying as the bastion of the PGA Tour amid the LIV Golf controversy and I think he finally breaks his major drought.
Xander Schauffele (+2000)
Once again, I’m not going to belabor the point here, but this feels like a wild top two outright picks given Rory’s drought at majors and the fact that Schauffele has never done it before. But again, when I look at Schauffele’s history at the US Open and combine that with the top-to-bottom game that will be required to succeed this season, I can’t look past him. He’s saddled with some decent value and I’m going to have some investment in him to also finally get over the hump.
Shane Lowry (+3000)
Another hit that we’re playing, these odds are too low for a past major champion within the last few years who seemingly is a perfect fit to succeed at a venue like The Country Club.
Lowry is third in Strokes Gained: Total over the last 40 rounds in this field and has been gaining more than 0.5 strokes per round in every category but around the green, which is at a still-solid 0.31 strokes gained per round. He’s playing incredible golf and has proven he’s built for this type of test and moment. I love the value with the Irishman to get the second major win of his career.
